As winter rolls into spring, the infamous snowdrops in Carlow signal the start of spring and the gardening season. This February, Carlow transforms into a mecca for gardening lovers and enthusiasts. Snowdrop Month brings together passionate gardeners of all abilities (or even if you just appreciate nature) to celebrate these delicate blooms and connect with like-minded people.

It all starts with the Snowdrop Gala – January 25th, 2025.

The festivities begin early with the Snowdrop Gala at Ballykealey House. Esteemed gardening experts like Keith Wiley and Callum Hallstead will share insights and tips, complemented by a guided tour of Altamont Gardens and a Specialist Plant Sale. For those making it a weekend, Friday evening features a special lecture by Chris Ireland Jones, adding a reason to stay over in Carlow at Avlon House Bed and Breakfast!

Altamont Gardens: A Snowdrop Wonderland

From February 1st to 28th, Altamont Gardens invites you to immerse yourselves at one of Ireland’s largest snowdrop collections. With over 150 varieties, including rare Avon Bulbs species, these 40 acres of stunning gardens along the River Slaney promise a calming and captivating refuge from everyday life. Daily guided tours at 2 p.m. provide fascinating insights into this extraordinary collection.
