Walk, Cycle, and explore our wonderful Irish Waterways, including The Barrow Way

Did you know our wonderful island of Ireland has over 1000km of lakes, rivers and canals that provides unlimited enjoyment for cyclists, walkers, anglers, paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts? If you are looking for a quiet, stunningly beautiful place to go to enjoy with your family or friends, irrespective of your level of fitness, please do come and visit Carlow and discover “The Barrow Way”

Surrounded by unspoilt landscape visitors will enjoy a leisurely flat walk, full of plant and bird life. As you stroll along the river bank, be part of the story of this 7km way that leads from Carlow Town to Milford.

The Barrow way follows the towpath, originally a path that went alongside the River Barrow where horses pulled barges and goods for transport in former times. You may spot some pretty lock houses (some still in use) and a variety of bridges, many arched that bring history to live along the river.

Should an excursion on the river appeal to you, then it’s all aboard a traditional Irish boat with Cliff Reid of www.boattrips.ie. (Pre-booking is essential). If you fancy some outdoor swimming on the river, Graiguenamanagh has two swimming spots designated for swimming that locals and visitors often enjoy.

If you are visiting from afar and would like to enquire about Bike Rental, please visit www.carlowtourism.com or even better, just ask our helpful and friendly staff at time of booking your stay with Avlon House Bed & Breakfast Carlow.

We look forward to hearing all your great reviews of the Barrow Way at Avlon House Bed & Breakfast and will be delighted to welcome you to Carlow to experience the best Waterway in Ireland!
